Myth and symbols

,

Surely we are far too rational a Buddhist to need these? This evenings talk explored this modern conundrum.

But first how do we define a ‘myth’ in Triratna?:  ‘A myth can be seen as a story that not necessarily having historical accuracy embodies a truth about the nature of existence’.

We have the myth of the Buddhas enlightenment,  the myths of the three jewels,  the symbol of the lotus and Buddha Rupa.

We explored how a rational approach to the Buddhist path is essential and how we also need to engage our emotions and how myths and symbols can help with this.  As Sangharakshita said ‘we need to find an emotional equivalent to our intellectual understanding ‘

After the break we entered a more reflective space: A metta bhavana followed by a reading by Buddhashanti of Pingya’s praises to the beyond a beautiful text of faith and devotion.
