In Buddhism, the eight worldly winds are a set of opposing forces that can cause suffering if we cling to them. The winds are:
- Gain and loss: Chasing what we want and holding on to it
- Fame and infamy: Being known or not known
- Praise and blame: Receiving positive or negative feedback from others
- Pleasure and pain: Feeling good or bad
The Buddha taught that these winds are constantly changing and beyond our control. The goal is to cultivate equanimity, or the ability to maintain balance and calm no matter what happens.
We had an interesting evening. Buddhasevaka let a meditation reminding us of the winds, during which Chandana dropped in some quotes from Vajragupta’s book ‘Sailing the Worldly Winds’
Buddhasevaka then offered some insight into his own life which has been conditioned by the worldly winds.
After the tea break, we talked about how the worldly winds affected our own lives. A lovely Puja, led by Dharmakasara, brought the evening to a close.
Mary, a member of our Sangha, kindly left us this message, “Thankyou to everyone who made last night so special. Xxx”
