About Us

‘Triratna’ origins

Triratna is a worldwide movement of people doing our best to engage with the Buddha’s teachings in the conditions of the modern world. This has not always been straightforward and mistakes have been made, followed by extensive work to learn from them and to prevent any repetition. Read more in the Triratna Story (free eBook) and do contact us with any questions and concerns.

Commitment

Our Vision

Sangharakshita.  The Unity of Buddhism

“If we learn to relate to our friends with metta, we will gradually learn to respond to the whole world with metta, with unselfishness. It is in this way that spiritual friendship is indeed the whole of the spiritual life.

Our Founder

Sangharakshita is the founder of the Triratna Buddhist community and Triratna Buddhist Order. He was born in London in 1925 and spent 25 years in India studying Buddhism under teachers from many traditions.  He was ordained as a Theravadin Bhikkhu (monk) in the 1940s.  After 25 years in India he returned to the UK and realised that, at that time, a new Buddhist tradition was needed that made the traditional teachings of the Buddha more accessible to the hearts and minds of the Western culture.  He died on the 3rd October 2018.
