Another excellent evening as the Q&A format extended for another week. This time, Dayaka interviewed Chandana around a subject which is often misunderstood in Buddhism, the law of karma. After a short settling meditation, Dayaka put the following questions;
- How does the idea of ‘karma’ fit in with the law of conditionality (that we discussed last week)?
- So it’s not really to do with ‘fate’ or ‘destiny’?
- Why is it important for someone on a Buddhist path to understand karma?
- So is it really about trying to be as good as person as we can?
- Aren’t ‘skilful’ and ‘unskilful’ just ‘good’ and ‘bad’ dressed in fancy language?
- Our choices are hardly ever simple – so how can we be sure that we’re making the most skilful one we can?
Chandana addressed these with typical intelligence and insight. This paved the way for another intriguing primary session following our tea break.
